Difficulties a child faces during his growing up years can be sometimes so overwhelming that it becomes impossible for the child to cope with it. For children who grow up in difficult situations, when it becomes too hard for them to handle their living environment, their soul comes up for their rescue. Human soul is designed with a protective mechanism to help children cope with unbearable circumstances. The soul creates an artificial identity to mask the real identity of the child. The artificial identity then takes on characteristics which are necessary to cope with the unbearable circumstance of the child.
We call the new identity the child takes on his ‘Ego Identity’ and his inherent soul characteristics his ‘True Self’. The ego identity is like a mask the child wears to hide his true self and protect himself from his harsh environment.
For example, a timid, humble and sensitive boy grows into his adulthood as a self confident, proud and emotionally inactive man through this transition. When the child moves through his adolescence into adulthood, he identifies himself completely with his ego identity and forgets his true self and has no way to return to it.
Due to ungodly characteristics like pride, rebellion, independence, selfishness and self centeredness, the ego identity is incapable of embracing the divine nature of Christ. While the ego identity has been helpful in coping up with challenges of childhood circumstances, it is the biggest hindrance in embracing godliness.
Before a strong foundation in Christ can be established in a person, the ego identity must be broken and surrendered before God. One's true self must be released from its prison and empowered by Christ to grow into its full potential.
For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. Romans 7:19-20
A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Matthew 13:3-8
I had experienced a transition from my true self to my ego identity in the first five years of my life. I continued living by my ego identity until I was 42 years.
At the age of 42, I entered into a fiery trial, that lasted for 7 years where I wandered aimlessly like a vagabond. The fiery trial led me to the breaking down of my ego identity and embracing of my true self. As a result, Christ began being formed within me and I am now firmly established and have a strong foundation in Him.
I have also personally facilitated a few others to give up their ego identity and embrace their true selves.
